About White Rock

Something Borrowed...

We Borrowed the Name

White Rock Chart image.

White Rock is simply a feature on nautical charts showing the Newport River near the spit of land south of Harlow(e) Creek (map coordinates: 34.777819,-76.726874). Our lot is contiguous; we liked the name and adopted it for this website where we intend to chronicle the process of purchasing a piece of property and building a retirement home. It is a convenient location to catalog and share ideas, concepts and comments on various aspects of the process like permitting, design, contstruction and the like.

If you found this site, you’re welcome to comment, criticize or offer advice. We’ve never retired before and this is the first effort at building a house from scratch.

We Borrowed the Design

West Indies, Creole, French Colonial Low Country ... the style has been replicated in many different, subtropical locales. Regardless of the name, we fell in love with this style. Characterized by a high, steeply-pitched roof providing shade for wide, surrounding porches, or "galleries," this building style is ideally suited for hot, humid climates.

We think this West Indies style offers a great template for a modern, affordable, energy efficient and easily maintained home.
